The Story Behind Duo Coaching
From the boardroom to the therapy room — and the unexpected journey that connected them.
Meet Dr Neil Wilkie
Most people don't become relationship therapists at fifty. But then, most people haven't spent the first half of their career as a CEO, raised over £500 million across fourteen management buyouts, and then discovered that the skills which build successful businesses are not the same skills that build successful relationships.
That discovery came the hard way — through the experience of a relationship that didn't survive, and the painful realisation that the therapy available to help was often inadequate. Sessions that were too short to reach anything real. A single therapist struggling to hold the balance. No clear framework. No measurable outcomes. No end in sight.
Rather than accept that this was simply how relationship therapy worked, Neil retrained. He qualified as a psychotherapist, began working with couples, and almost immediately started questioning the model he'd been taught. Why fifty minutes? Why one therapist? Why no systematic way of assessing what was actually going on in the relationship?
Over fifteen years of clinical practice, working with hundreds of couples alongside his co-therapist Maria Hudson, those questions became answers. The answers became a framework. And the framework became Duo Coaching.
THE ACADEMIC FOUNDATION
Grounded in Research
In 2024, Neil completed his doctorate at Middlesex University — a research study into The Phenomenology of Relationships that explored how people actually experience their partnerships, not just how theory says they should. The doctoral work provided the academic foundation for what clinical practice had already revealed: that relationships are complex, multi-dimensional systems that require more time, more perspective, and more integrative skill than the traditional model offers.
Neil is now a Visiting Fellow at Middlesex University, and the Duo Coaching Framework is published by Routledge as a professional trilogy — bringing rigorous academic grounding to an approach born from real-world clinical experience.
He has published over 370 articles on relationships, reaching millions of readers worldwide. His online Relationship Paradigm assessment at www.relationshipparadigm.com has been completed by thousands of couples seeking to understand the health of their partnership.
THE MISSION
Neil's business background isn't incidental to Duo Coaching — it's foundational. Decades of leadership, negotiation, and organisational change taught him things that most therapy training doesn't cover: the importance of clear outcomes, the power of structured processes, the difference between activity and progress, and the reality that if you can't measure change, you can't be sure it's happening.
These principles are woven into the Duo Coaching Framework. Every engagement begins with clear, specific outcomes. Progress is measured through the Relationship Paradigm at every stage. The six-session structure has a defined beginning, middle, and end. And the co-therapy partnership mirrors the collaborative leadership that makes organisations — and relationships — work.
The result is an approach that combines therapeutic depth with practical rigour. Feelings and frameworks. Intuition and evidence. The head and the heart.
